right now my speedo is messed up due to a diff issue and im hitting R instead of 5th on occasion, but only at lower speeds. What speed does the reverse lockout occur so i dont try to shove it into 5th before that speed?
Thanks
dave

Are you pushing too hard? You can override the lockout if you push hard enough. All the lockout solenoid does is engage a spring that holds the gate closed. It is designed to be overridden in case there is a problem with the solenoid.

i dont think so. i never once had this problem before the rear went in. Im sure its the speedo and the reverse lockout not engaging. sometimes i can push it further over to teh right then others and im trying to see what MPH this occurs.

I believe its 5mph as suggested above. If your solenoid is failing, the good news is that its cheap and you can replace it pretty simply.
Mine started out the same as yours- and quickly the situation deteriated to any speed, the lockout would not work. Try shifting to 5th on the freeway and tapping R. You will fill your drawers just like I did.
We hooked up the ODB scanner and tried to manually open it and now the car fires codes for it- I'd wonder if yours would do the same.
I know mine is either a loose ground or the PCM. I just haven't had the time or money to pay somebody to find out which it is. Until then, I have been skipping 5th pretty often. Hope yours is nothing.

hmmm. i think i did this. i was racing a supra on the highway (he kicked my ****) and when i was trying to go from 4th to 5th (pretty pissed at this point) i think i went into reverse, but i was thinking, there's no way this could be reverse so i was pushing and grinding and finally gave up when the supra was like 20 car lengths away. but anyway now my reverse gear is all jacked up. when i try to back out of the garage in the morning (or back up all day for that matter) it doesnt want to go into R and even when it finally does i have to hold it in while backing up or it sometimes slips out of reverse.
ive had an appt. at the dealership, but i missed it. i dont guess its getting any worse, just need to get it fixed.
