According to the shop manual, in order to replace the rear studs I have to remove the hub by seperating the ball joint and pulling the assembly off the axle.
I've also been told that it can be done by removing the brake assembly, removing the axle nut, removing the two nuts that hold the upper control arm to the frame, and dropping the unit down to access the torx screws behind the parking brake. This method does not require the ball joint to be seperated.
What are the pros and cons of these two methods and does anyone have suggestions as to which method is easier/better. Will the car need to be re-aligned after this???? Thanks.
Here are the instructions I used, make the job easy. http://www.jayleone.com/C5_Rear_Wheel_Bearing.doc (best to right-click and save as the document its about 1.5MB) Awesome instructions, I wish I could remember where I got them to give the guy credit.
Once you have the bearing off, just pound the old studs out and put the new ones in. Use some washers and a lugnut to seat the new studs.
Once you do the first one you'ss see how easy it is and the second one will go fast.
If there is enough room for a c-clamp a short piece of pipe is placed over the stud head at the back of the hub and the c-clamp will push the stud through. To install a new stud the pipe is placed in the front of the hub and the c-clamp will force the new stud into the hub. All this depends on having enough room for the right c-clamp; I haven't tried this on a C5 but on other cars.
