Check your option code listing (inside glove box or under one of the rear compartment covers, not sure on a '98), look for G90 & G92, if you have those it's a 3.15, if not it's a 2.73. Unless your car is a 6 speed, they are all 3.42's.
Another way other than looking for the proper axle code is something that was posted here a while back that actually works.
Find yourself a deserted stretch of road and in 4th gear for manuals or 3rd in auto, get your speed to 80 MPH and hold it and check your RPM's. If you had 2.73, you should be reading aprox 2700 RPM's, for 3.15 3150 RPM's..etc..etc.
I actually tried this on my 99 FRC with a 3.73 ratio and I was amazed that the RPM's were damn close to 3700!!
Of course finding the axle code is probably easier AND safer but I still thought that it was pretty
I have a 98 C5 w/ standard package.
I'm assuming it's a 2:73 how can I tell for sure?
Just look under your car! On the back plate of your differiential you will find a white sticker that says it is a 2:73 or 3:15. If not it should be written on there with a black magic marker.
