Is there a trick to getting this thing off?
I am trying to replace an optispark but cant get pas the pulley.
Does someone know of a puller that fits in the cramped area in front of the engine?
There isn't one. You have to remove the steering rack and radiator and hood to get the radiator out. The A/C condensor can stay. I will be doing this on the C5 next week.
after you remove the three bolts that hold the balancer to the crank, you should be able to use a pry bar and lightly pry from diffrent angles to get the balancer pulley off,you may also spray some penatrating oil to help the process
I am a little confused at the different replies you have got here, first off, if you are talking about a C5 then you have to remove the steering rack, and there is only one bolt that holds the pulley on. You will have to get a puller to get it off. Call a GM dealership and they can tell you the tool that you need. I have done this numerous times, and you do not have to remove the radiator or hood, unless you are replacing the cam. Hope this helps.
I sprayed it wiht wd40 but it doesnt seem like it will budge.
Is there a Gear puller I can use to get it off.
Everyone I have is just to big .
Well assuming you have the steering rack off, which you must, and the crank bolt that holds the crank pulley on removed, all you need is a failry standard 3 arm pulley puller. Look at the one on jmX's ls1howto.com on the c5 h/c swap page. THere is a picture witht the puller on the pulley in the correct position to remove. http://www.ls1howto.com/howto/c5/hea...movepulley.jpg
If I am wrong and you do not have the steering rack out, I do not think it's possible. Not an expert, just my $.02... Hope that helps.
Thanks for the advise, Im sure ill need it somday for my y2k.
Right now im working on my friends 93 lt1 I just posted this here by mistake.
