Friday night I got a DIC message to check my tire pressure, a sensor had failed. When I checked, the left rear read LRXXXX, the other 3 read 32 pounds. I checked the Forum archives and tried to reset the sensors with a magnet as outlined. Both the front 2 sensors and the right rear reset. The left rear would not beep the horn and still registers as LRXXXX. I get the same "failure" message every time I start the car until I use the reset button.
Do I have a bad sensor? The car is a 2000 FRC with 5,300 miles on it. Is this a difficult/expensive fix?
I would guess that the battery died in that sensor, and you will need to get a new one. They run around $80-90 new. They will have to unmount the tire from the wheel to replace the sensor, but as long as they mark the current balance spot, they shouldn't have to rebalance it.
With the C5, there are two generations of sensors: the ones for '97-'00, and '01-'04. Make sure that you get a 97-00 sensor.
TORRED, it's most likely the battery in the sensor...again without being too cynical it's just one of those things that GM really didn't think all the way through...after all, who knows but one of the other sensors might just fail in the next week or so...or it could fail in month. The bottom line is that it is a real hassle (and $$$) to take it in and have your tire dismounted, etc. Give me back the old regular tires and stick a mini-spare back in the Vette -- who carries around two golf bags anyway?
Now that a lot of the fifth generation Vettes are getting older, more and more tire sensors will be failing.
I guess one way to avoid the hassle is to get all the sensors replaced at the same time...expensive, but a lot less hassle.
You can pick up new sensors from many forum vendors (prices do vary but be careful of the S&H charges), late model used sensors in the C5 Parts for Sale/Wanted, or you can have them rebuilt. Again, check the C5 Parts for Sale/Wanted for who rebuilds them (that thread may be in the archieves now so you'll have to do a search).
