My shifter has acted wierd as of lately. It feels "sticky" is the best way I can describe it. Like it's not spring loaded or something. I just recently got done putting my MN12 back in after rebuilding it, but I know for sure its not the tranny doing this because when it was out, the shifter linkage that comes out the front of the trans would act fine and was spring loaded just turning it with a screwdriver (in that little hole that the linkage pins into that goes to the shifter) just running thru all the gears. Also, it seems hard to get it to move all the way to the left to get it into 1st. And I have to pretty much lean all my weight on it to get it to the right all the way to get it to go into reverse. I know the problem has got to be the shifter since my trans linkage worked fine when it was out. If it's not in the shifter could it possibly be in the linkage that goes from the shifter to the trans? I don't see how that could cause any problems though since there is really no room for adjustment on the linkage at all. I did notice some places it looked like you can adjust the shifter when I had the console apart. However, I have not ever messed with any of the adjustments, and it is the stock shifter. It worked just fine before I took the tranny out for the rebuild  Any suggestions? TIA :D :flag
I plan to get an aftermarket shifter soon. however, I'm not sure if this will solve my problem.
If you look at the linkage below the shifter, there is a round fitting and when you move the shifter forward, the round metal rod in the round fitting moves forward and backward, when you move the shifter left and right, the metal rod rotates.
Lubricate that metal rod.
Mine was sticking for a while, I thought it was my tranny. Nope tranny fine, just the linkage. I lubed it about 3 months ago, time to do it again.
Well I tore into it expecting the worse. Turned out my problem was not my shifter or my trans... It was the bolt that connects the shifter to the linkage. It had no threads where the notches were so it would allow considerable movement by the shifter before the linkage would even start to rotate. Not sure how it lost threads there... I think maybe from taking it out and putting it in so much. Maybe from overtightening... Got a new bolt in and works like it should! Glad this was an easy inexpensive fix :D
I did not use the right stuff since I have to do it again. I used some WD40.
I did not know that it would make a difference. I had the shifter out while putting sound deadening material in the car and just for the heck of it lubed the stuff a little.
Not sure what to use next maybe some Lithium Grease?
