I notice that users reporting results of aftermarket cams all have great power increases but in the upper range. I don't drag race but would like more kick in the low and mid range. Is there a cam designed for such a thing?
Depends what you mean by low end. Most of those cams that show big top-end gains also pick up extra TQ from 2500 & up. It's below 2K RPMs where the power can lag. The simplest solution is to advance the cam. Most aftermarket grinds already come advanced two degrees, and on a bigger cam, another two degrees helps even more. What that does is open the intake valve a little earlier, helping low-end TQ and throttle response.
Comp Cams and others make an adjustable timing chain kit that will allow you to change the cam timing up to four degrees, without having to remove the cam.
Another approach that some use is to go with a narrower LSA. IMHO, this will improve the mid-range, but have little effect on low-end TQ. It will also make the idle a lot rougher, which some guys seem to like.
try the stock Z06 cam. Talk to a tuner about this cam it produces good torque.
I would go with gears instead of the cam, best money spent.
quick mod, good results and you didn't even open the motor.
3.73 with the auto will give it a nice low end feel.
Gears, Gears, Gears!!! And a TC if it's an A4. That'll take care of the low end. A cam and headers will take care of the top end... assuming you have an intake and exhaust. Of course then you'll need new wheels and tires to get traction... :D :D
:iagree: Cam (For optimum torque in the low to mid-range on stock LS1 heads choose one with less duration than a 224) or Gears (3.73).
I recently did a cam only install - using the CompCams 220/220 .564/.564 114 from TSP, which gave me incredible RWTQ (376) with my stock LS1 heads! In fact my tuner wants me to return this Friday because he thinks he can pull more hp and tq out of her with a "conservative" tune.
Idles like stock and less expensive to buy/install than gears. However, now that I've got the cam I plan to get 3.90s later this year.
