pulling codes on the DIC?

pulling codes on the DIC?
hi, all. just got my '01 home a few days ago but i've had an intermittant 'check engine' light for just about the entire time (more on than off). i checked the tech tips on how to pull a code but for some reason i haven't been successful. the tech tip does not specify key position when pulling codes. i have tried it with key, w/o key, key inserted, key in 'on' and key in 'acc'. i press and hold 'options' while pressing 'fuel' four times just like the tip says--still no codes.
what am i doing wrong?
car still runs really well. i have checked easy stuff like making sure all the plug wires are plugged in and the gas cap is on fully but still no luck. any suggestions?

You can pull codes while the car is running or simply "on"....at least in my 2001 you can. Not when driving...but in Park or Neutral.

thanks guys, that's the info i was looking for. i had a bunch of codes but cosidering all the work that has been done to the car recently, the only one i think i should be worried about is the PO410H C code. i'll clear them and check under the hood. i'll drive it again tonight and see if it pops back up.
