Cam Swap
I’m getting ready to swap the cam on my LS1 and need some advice. I’ve done many swaps on S/B before but I know the LS1 is different. Since you can’t remove the lifters without removing the heads, the lifters must be held up and out of the way before removing the cam.
I heard of this tool, “JPR Lifter Tool”, that is installed to hold the lifters up. I also heard it cost about $90:eek:. Has anyone used this tool and can they tell me how it works? Anyone do a swap without one?
I don't know anything about that tool, but I've spoken to several tuners lately and I've been told as long as you take out the old cam and install the new one right away, no special tools required to hold up the lifters. Haven't done this myself, but that is what I'm told. :)
I wouldn't trust those lifter keepers for the life of me. When I did my heads/cam swap 1/2 of the lifters fell down right away. The JPR tool is nice and priciy, but it works. Some folks over on LS1TECH have made their own out of 1/8" welding rod(tig rod).
If your doing it though, when your using the tool. Make sure to at least spin the cam 5 or 6 times to hopefully get the lifters seated as high in the keepers as possible. This is with the push rods removed of course.
I am just completing a cam swap on a 2002 Z06 and I used the JPR Tool.
It made the job a piece of cake. Each of the two rods (which are shaped like a half moon) slips right in a hole on either side of the cam prior to pulling it out and holds the lifters in place. You may have to turn rotate the cam as you push the rod in to get everything in line.
It is a whole lot easier and less complicated than using (16) magnets, and is actually cheaper depending on where you get hte pen magnets.
I have the JPR tool it works. I will sell it to you if you want it. As I am not doing this again anytime soon and then I will be pulling the heads so I will not need it again. If interested please take this to email.
