Ok guys, Im gonna change the coolant in my C5 tomorrow. (the guy that put my cam in last week said the coolant seemed " a little thin"??). Anyways, the cars 5 years old, so time to change it. Two questions, how big of a catch can or bucket do I need if im just draining from the radiator?? Im not going to flush the whole system. Then after I drain it, do I add the same amount back in or just fill up the radiator and go all the way to the full mark on the overflow tank??
Thanks guys
Rob
Wait a minute... are you telling me the guy that put in your cam.... requires water pump and radiator removal... was so cheap as to return 5 year old coolant to your car.... then tell you it looked alittle thin.... can I have his name so as I can steer clear of this guy
Actually, he is an excellent guy. He was going to add new dexcool but he happened to be out. He automatically checked the car over, hes very thorough, thats why he noticed it. Asked me if it was ok to keep the existing coolant. I agreed so I could get my car back ASAP to enjoy the cam. Thats why Im changing it, I didnt want to wait for him to do it. Not a big deal.
By the way, do you have answers to my two questions??

You will get about a gallon and a half out of the radiator drain, which will drain the radiator and overflow tank. There will still be some coolant left in the block. To fill you use only the overflow tank, there is no access to the radiator. I would premix the coolant to the 50/50 mixture. Fill to the full level on overflow tank, idle car for one minute, install cap, rev to 3000 rpm a few times untill coolant reaches 210 degrees, stop motor, fill again if necessary (open cap slowly to release pressure), install cap, start and rev some more, do this until level doesn't change.
