I have read a few posts about different short throw shifters....from Hurst, to Kirban, to B&M Ripper....Although I am partial to Hurst, I have read some negitive things about how stiff they are and people missing shifts, something to do with springs...Would like some of you to chime in and give your opinions...I have a 2003 ZO6
Thanks
Re: Looking for short throw shifter....need help! (Clubowner)
i have a 03 z06 also.i put in the hurst.i left the factory springs in,but the hurst comes with 2 more sets if you want to change them.the shifter was stiff after th install, but loosened up a bit after a few miles.i reused the factory **** and the shifter had the "rattle".i replaced the **** with a "pool ball"type **** and most of the rattle went away.i didn't put the pvc block off over the shifter so i tend to hear more engine noise than the stock shifter, but it doesn't bother me.
just my .02

I've got a stock one shortened 1' with the slot machined longer and rethreaded to make up for the shorting. Make you a good deal, lots of people like the shortened stock shifter. becase it's quiet. Just a thought. Ron B.

I went with the hurst and a Momo ****.
Great mod. No regrets. No noise and 1/2 hour install. It shifts MUCH better than the stock shifter on my Z. It is almost as good as the Muncie on my 65. I hae had a # of people tell me how grea my car shifts. The only downside is that it takes a couple of weeks for the springs to break in.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
Kirban seems to have the least throw reduction, B&M allows use of the stock insulator, Breathless has adjustable angle and shape sticks, and Hurst readily adjustable springs.
I've used other Hursts for decades, but they were simply too late to the C-5 party for me, so I went with a B&M that I further shortened by about 3/4" and use a 2.25" black cueball that I drilled full depth and tapped. I wanted short throw, number one!
Since one can control how far down the large cueball fits on the shaft (it gives considerable adjustment being so large), one can futher shorten the throws rather dramatically. However, since I put the B&M in the car with only about 100 miles on the clock, both tranny and shifter were pretty stiff so it was about 5000 miles before dropping the **** down about half thickness was "comfortable" on the shortened shaft. At 19000 miles I could now lower it the final inch and be okay, effort wise. I may when I get the chance. The point is, it all loosens up with use and, imho, that's a good thing.
Get rid of that Porschesque, leather-wrapped, baseball bat at your earliest convenence and I doubt you'll regret it. I see from pix of the C-6, if accurate, the new shifter is considerably shorter. Humm, maybe they ARE learning... occasionally!

I have a Hurst. Absolutely love it. Did put in the two softest springs, and it is somewhat stiff even after break-in, but you have to expect it to be if you want crispness and precision with a short-throw. And I don't think it's possible to miss a shift with it.

I have an '03 Convertible and put the Hurst in after around 15000 miles or so. It was an immediately noticable improvement. I went with the Hurst since I had heard the name for so long, and also because I generally heard good reviews of it. Not that I've heard anything bad about the B&M or Kirban. So much of it comes down to personal preference.
I used the lighter springs, and even with them, it is much more firm than the stock shifter. I almost can't imagine anyone using the thicker, stiffer springs. But, the Hurst feels so much better than stock, and it definitely shifts more precisely and with less throw.
The only shifts that I have "missed" are when going from 4th to 5th but actually ending up in 3rd. I think I've also done some 5th to 6th but hitting 4th instead. But, that generally only happens if I'm not really paying attention or really tired.
I did drive an '04 Z06 at a dealer, so it had the stock shifter. I was really, really impressed with it except for the stock shifter. I guess I had thought that the Z06 would have had a better shifter than the coupe and vert. And driving the Z06 almost made me wish I had gone for a Z over the Vert! :D
Re: Looking for short throw shifter....need help! (Clubowner)
Thanks guys for all the info...seems no matter which I install, its going to be stiff until broken in...I went to my tuner yesterday and he suggested just shortening my stock shifter, something about cutting it....Not sure if I want to go that route...Hurst has always been sort of an icon to me, but I have geard good things about all the rest...guess it does come down to personal prefrence......BPP is located about 10 miles from me and I am familiar with their shifter and its distinct angle adjustments.......The Hurst I tried was in a 03 Z and it was extremely tight, but the distance the stick had to travel was incredible as compared to my stock "baseball Bat"........I will let you know which way i go this week...again, thanks for the info...
