A mechanic on a local talk show recommended using LubeGard to protect the tranny components against damage due to high heat (ie. traffic jam city driving). I'm curious if anyone here has used it and what their observations/recommendations are on the product.
I found it at Napa and it's not cheap...$10 for a little bottle of it. Anyways, post your comments.
I've used it for years, mostly in tow vehicles where the trans sees lots of heat. Learned about it when I owned a tranny shop and had to cover warranty failures - using LubeGard made a marked difference in early failures after rebuild. It's absolutely the only additive I'd ever put in a tranny, but after seeing how it performs in literally hundreds of rebuilds I wouldn't run without it now in my own vehicles.
:iagree: Lubeguard is definately NOT snake oil! Thats why Ford,GM,Saab etc. ,etc.,etc. use it for all their factory rebuilds. Its the ONLY trans additive actually endorsed by OEM's.In an automotive tech college I went to for a few classes, they had Lubeguard posters everywhere,& used it on all the auto trans rebuilds done in class.Just bought a new trans additive they came out with called"Lubeguard Platinum".Its a universal trans additive & converts Dexron3 to Mercon V,a better lubricant. When I put in my trans cooler I'll put it in my C5.It's not a cure all if your trans has serious ills ,but can provide better shifting , eliminate TC shudder & lower temps.Put it in my '88 Fiero Formula 8 years ago & about 3-4 fluid changes since & racked up over 170k on it , absolutely no trans problems.Somewhat rare for that trans.
I heard a lot of good things about the product. But, the product isn't well recognized among the public masses as say Slick50, etc.
I did buy the product after reading the product packaging. It's pretty obvious that an engineer made the discovery and it does seem the automakers believe in the product. But with all things new, I was skeptical about their claims and just wanted comments from users of the product.
Is there a cheaper place to buy Lubegard other than Napa?
I dont use it for the C5, I only use Redline by itself.
However I use it on my other car (Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX), and without it my tranny does act up and slips. The car requires fluid that exceeds Dextron III rating and Lubegard does help. I use a tube of it ($12/black tube) whenever I change the tranny fluid.
