My battery (1999 C5) had to be charged yesterday. After drying the car with the trunk and both doors open. The battery would not start the car. The car has only been used once 2 weeks ago since the fall. I charged it for 5 minutes and it started right up.
Went for a ride about 2 miles and the Service ABS light came on. My Saturn says the ABs will come on if there is a problem with the charging system.
Should I replce the abttery or have the dealer check the ABS?
Re: weak battery Can this cause ABS code? (Ross78)
Suggest you drive it 20 -30 miles to get the battery charged and then see what happens with the ABS light. If the problem goes away because the battery is fully charged you are in luck. Otherwise you may need a battery anyway, and if the ABS light goes again on you may want to take it to the dealr.
Re: weak battery Can this cause ABS code? (Ross78)
Yes. I had the same issue on my 02 vert after jumping the battery to start. After running for 2 hours the ABS light was still on and the radio lights dimmed when I used the turn signals. Parked it in the garage and tried to restart..not. The battery was toast. Replaced with an Optima Yellow Top. No issues with ABS code since battery replacement. :flag
Re: weak battery Can this cause ABS code? (Ross78)
A weak battery or an interruption in current will cause all kinds of codes/problems. Some batteries will not take a full charge after being "dead", so I would have this checked. Time for a new AGM battery?
Re: weak battery Can this cause ABS code? (carpe dm)
Get rid of the stock battery. I went through 4 Delco batteries, with all crapping out in 6 mos. I have a cheap everstart from Wal mart, had it almost a year, and starts with no probs. And in answer to your question, the low battery will set all kinds of codes til you get it charged properly. Been there done that
Re: weak battery Can this cause ABS code? (Ross78)
I certainly agree... a weak battery is the bane of electronic systems. Not worth the bother, just get a new battery and get on with things. I've used Optimas in all sorts of vehicles for years with good luck.
Re: weak battery Can this cause ABS code? (Heretic)
Replaced the battery, trickle charged it with tender for a couple of hours. ran the car for an hour. Then trickle charged it overnight. No codes while running the car.
Brought the car to the dealer to be sure everything is working OK.
They stated the codes were phantom codes and cleared them. No trouble found. I picked up the car on the way home the "Service ABS" and Service Traction Control" lights were back on.
Back to the dealer and left the car again.
Anyone have any ideas? I am not sure the dealer will figure out what is going on.
