Hi all...I keep hearing how new push rods are installed with cam changes and does someone have a procedure written up to check the pushrods for the proper length when going from stock to some other mild cam.
I ordered a PushRod checker but it came with no instructions on how to go about using it. Any guidance will be appreciated. Tom
Re: How to determine pushrod length(any procedures??) (Patches)
Tom,
If your heads have not been milled and you are not removing them this time then the current lenght should be correct. Now if the heads are milled and/or you are using a head gasket with a big difference in thickness then you may need to check the length. Otherwise 7.40 is the way to go.
Re: How to determine pushrod length(any procedures??) (C4TOMCAT)
If the only change from to your stock LS1 is a ZO6 cam then if the cam was a 2001 ZO6 cam then you can use the stock length (7.400) pushrods. If the cam was a 2002 and newer ZO6 cam then you would need to use longer (7.450) pushrods
Re: How to determine pushrod length(any procedures??) (C4TOMCAT)
Tom,
In regards to the post above about the 7.45 length, the answer to your question is yes. Now having said that, the reference to the 02-03 Z06 cam needing a 7.45 PR is new to me. The only length I have ever heard referenced to the LS1 of LS6 is 7.40.
Next question is why go to all this trouble and switch to only a Z06 cam? You could go aftermarket my F4 has worked great and it used a stock length PR.
Re: How to determine pushrod length(any procedures??) (gonbad)
The later ZO6 cam has a base circle .050 smaller than the others. In the later ZO6 the difference is made up with the use of longer valves that allows the use of the same 7.400 pushrods as the LS1.
Re: How to determine pushrod length(any procedures??) (gonbad)
Hi gonbad & SFvetteman,
Thanks for the replys...I really don't know what direction I am going to go later this summer. This car is my daily driver and I don't intend to race it on any regular basis...autorcross or two with a club later. I was planning on building a motor...want some late model practice and never dealth with the rod lengths on a 69 road course car...flat tappit hydraulic. I am just thinking out loud now and had not really seen anything that talked about how and why you need to go with longer push rods. (I understand the geometry reason)
Gonbad and Patches statement/link enlightened me as to the reason with the LS1 & Z06 cam circles. Thanks for the info...may come back later with more info requirements. Save the Wave, Tom
Re: How to determine pushrod length(any procedures??) (SFVetteman)
Yes the 02 Z06 cam is .050 smaller, so that is smaller by .025 on each side of the cam, so I believe 7.425 is the correct size, so your either .025 to long or short, and I been told that shorter is better. :beatdeadhorse:
