Over the past year i've been noticing that my car pings all too easily under load. I haven't scanned it for KR, but the pinging is clearly noticable a the strip. Does anyone have an idea what my issue is/experienced this same problem?
- It only happens on the top end (over 5300ish RPM).
- I only run Sunoco 94 or BP 93 octane fuels. It's worse if i use others.
- It doesn't only occur in hot weather.
Any ideas other than just saying "take it to the dealer"?
It could be that there is a lot of sludge on tops of the pistons.
De-carbonization might fix it
It sure will help ?
Many miles without a catch can = sludge
My dad's '99 does the same thing as your car. It scared the poopie out of me the first time we had it on the dyno and I heard it. The only thing I can think to do to help combat it is to put some Water Wetter in the radiator and bypass the throttle body coolant. Other than that it's going to have to be tuned out.

[b]well, if you can hear or sense the knock, your knock retard sensor is not working properly.
running sunoco 94 in cool weather and you still can hear knock is pretty serious, you need to take it to a tuner or dealer, have the heads pulled and see if there is any damage.
scanning and tuning should be done after the engine is assembled and/or repaired.
