ive done pads/rotor replacement on trucks, and other cars and suburbans in the past. i know some cars have caliper bolts with normal heads u can use normal sockets on etc. i just want to make sure i have the right socket, allen wrench, etc to get them loose so i can mount my slotted/cross drilled rotors and ceramic pads this afternoon. i wont have access to teh car while its apart obviously so i cant handle any last minute tool trips. does the C5 use normal sockets on the bolts or the TORX head stuff or allen head or what? i know how to get it all apart as i saw it done when i had normal stock stuff put on a year ago and "supervised" but i didnt pay attention to see what size socket, etc they used. anyone wanna share with me so i can pull the wheels off and tackle it without having to remount them to make a last minute trip to get a socket i dont have? haha thanks in advance.
Re: brake pad ? for a novice (sebringsilver97coupe)
thanks anyway. ought to stop very sweet now. and im sure it has less rotational weight at each corner. not from teh cross drilled rotors but from the mounds of brake dust that has accumulated back there in the past year. haha hopefully these ceramics will be quiet and dust free.
Re: brake pad ? for a novice (sebringsilver97coupe)
Replacing the rotors/pads doesn't require any special tools other than something stout enough to break the caliper bracket bolts free from their loctited 125 lbs. ft. of torque. I used "Betsy", my 5 lb. sledge, and a breaker bar.
I'll send you the illustrated procedure from the manual via email.

I agree. Those caliper bracket bolts are some kinda tight! Make sure and get the kids and women clear of the area. There could be some colorful language used. Don't recall the exact socket size, but I want to say it was a 15mm. At any rate it's not some odd-ball tool/size.

You will need the 21 mm socket, a breakover bar or good ratchet and hammer combo for the caliper brackets. The caliper itself used hex bolts, you will need two wrenches (I think they are 15 mm)I used a socket and wrench to get those off. the front rotors are easy, might have to remove the little star clip on the wheel stud (dont need it) , the rear , well they may hang up on the e-brake shoes,,,work them off evenly. Be sure to watch the spring for the e-brake, do one side at a time to be sure you get the spring back in right if it falls out...If you have done other brake jobs, this one will be easy....

It is 21MM for the large bracket bolts.
Thanks Rich. I just did this job about three weeks ago, but hey, I've slept sinc then.
thanks for all the info guys. yeah, it went smoothly. looks so sweet with those Y2K chromies and read calipers and polished letters on teh calipers and slotted/drilled rotors. looks very good especiallyfor a 97. cant wait till the paint is good and dry to go take it for a spin....
