Ok, wierd question, but I heard from someone that the Vettes run cooler at idel and what not when the AC is on... explanation given is that the fan runs while the AC is on, which in turn cools the engine.. but when the AC is off, the fan only turns on when engine is 250+... any truth to this?
not exactly. Fan comes on at 226 I believe. If you have the AC on, the second fan comes on as well, but I'm not sure at what temp.
Edit: this is easy to try. start your car and let it idle while watching coolant temp... at 226, fan should come on. turn AC on and off and listen to fan noise.
During a recent dyno day some cars temps would rise, so they would kick on the AC and sure enough the temps would fall to about 205 or so from well over 220. I know the fans kick on earlier with the AC engaged.
Considering I grew up in the 50 and 60's this concept is alien to me but it sure works when I'm sitting traffic and I see my temps start to creep up, I turn on the AC.
