C5 Exterior Mirrors "Fell Off"
Over a period of two months first the passenger side and then the driver side mirrors have become unsecured from their pivot posts and are now hanging by the wiring harnesses. This occured while removing the car cover which has mirror pockets. Fortunately this occured in my garage, not on the road where the results might have been disasterous. Close examination (by me) suggests that a retaining ring may have come off inside the mirror housing but I can't get the housing open to check this. My dealer's Corvette tech says that the whole mirror assembly must be replaced, an expensive proposition. The mirrors have never be exposed to any "break away" conditions.
Can anyone confirm this or offer some suggestion as to what component has failed?

There were several posts in the past about this problem and a fellow advertised about having a permanant fix. I did not mark the articles so I can not give you the address, but I would think search might turn them up, if the serch engine behaves itself.
