It's Monday; I'm nostalgic. When I was a kid, I worked a Porsche dealership service department. Naturally, we all paid attention to Mark Donahue in the 917s. At the time, Porsche gave Penske the race cars and everyone else got the "customer cars." Donahue and Penske got a couple of 917s and a bunch of motors for testing. Donahue went out and proceeded to blow up the motor in short order. New motor in, check the old one: bent valves, etc. Donahue goes out again and blows up the second motor. Penske looks at the second motor, same thing: all busted up.
Penske: "Mark, what are you shifting at?"
Donahue: "I don't know..."
Penske: What do you mean you don't know?"
Donahue: "I mean I don't know. You told me it had a rev limiter, so I wait til I hit the rev limiter before I shift..."
BTW this has nothing to do with modern rev limiters. If 917s were like other Porsches at the time, the rev limiter was mechanical, not electronic.

Guys, this one goes in the pilot error column :bb The PCM can do a more accurate job shifting the tranny if you'll let it. The only thing I really use the shifter for is engine braking from time to time. I do remember playing with shifting manually at the strip one day. Pretty funny hearing an A4 whap on the limiter... Sadly at this particular track the return lane was between the grandstand and the track so you had to pass the crowd twice.
