My 02 Z06 is experiencing pain... either tranny or rear-end... Leaning towards rear-end.

Car has 25,000 miles and is stock expcept for Stingers and Vortex airbox.

Here are the symptoms:
- Car, in all gears, pulls as normal
- 1, 2: no unusual behavior
- 3: might be slight whine that sounds like the B&M ripper transmitting transmission noise. not the typical higher pitcehd MN12 gear whine.
- 4, 5, 6: Noisse as described in 3rd gear, but 10-30 X. I can hear the noise starting aroudn 1500 RPM. The noise gets louder the faster you go. RPMs don't seem don't impact the volume too much. If coasting, there is NO noise. The slightest bit of throttle produces the noise.

What do you think the issue might be?

I'm hoping TJ is open tomorrow. They usually are, but since this is the holiday weekend... Also, I need it fixed by next Friday.

Thanks,
Doug

I too am chasing a noise, mine is a whirring with occassional clicking. Whirring starts around 50ish and gets louder at 60. The clicking is on soft deceleration from 45 down to 30ish and has only happened twice. I'm thinking CV joints. I'm hoping it's tires.

Your noise sounds different than mine. Have you checked the oil levels and color in the tranny and rear end? Can you tell where it's coming from? I think your noise is speed related which usually rules out the transmission, but not always.

Wheel bearings are easy to check. Jack up the car (remember to use jack stands) and see if they is any play in the wheels. Take the car for a 5-10 min drive at highway speeds and IMMEDIATELY check the hubs for heat. Don't do any hard braking.

The noice could also be tire related. Do you have a buddy with a C5? Switch tires, go for a ride. Easy and free diagnosis.

At least this gives you something to start with.

Check to make sure you don't have a brake line rubbing on a tire or rim, the clicking could be the wheel weight if they're mounted on the inside.
