Got my 2001 Z Dec 16th. Had only put 2000 miles on it since then, with no racing, and 800 of the miles were highway....when the oil light popped on...a quart low . Took it in, and the dealersip said GM allows about a quart usage every 3000 miles, which i said was total BS for a late model fuel injected car, this isnt a 454 carbeurated, big block.
Anyway, i tipped the serviceman well, and he took good care of me. Rather than make me go through the whole oil consumption test, and BS. They went right to work and replaced the rings under warranty.
My question is now, is there a break-in period while the rings set?????? Do i need to change the oil after 500 miles????? Any tips????? Thanks.
They do not rehone the cylinder walls when doing this repair so the rings only need to run a few hundred miles. The reason our 2001 engines consume more oil is due to GM's brilliant deisre to gain a bit more MPG by using a thinner compression rings which flutters under heavy loads (above 3000 rpm) leaving oil on the cylinder walls and then burning it off - consuming - during the next firing cycle.
Just drive the car for a couple of hundred miles, change the oil - in case the ******** at the dealer failed to clean the engine properly - and then drive it like you stole it.
Re: Another 2001 with oil usage :( (jeanlucpicard)
I had my y2k RE RINGED in march of 2004. the dealer told meto put on 600 miles and come back for an oil change. They also did all my bolt ons in ym sig at the same time. They charge me nothing for the oil change, but 90 bucks, an hour labor, to re- tighten the nuts and bolts on the bolt ons.
I went through this. Changed oil after 500 miles and then again after another 1000 just to be safe. I'm driving it normal now and waiting to see if my usage is okay. It's at least better as it was a quart every 800 miles. Good luck to us both!
