Default Just how restrictive are stock catbacks?

I've currently got Corsa Indy's on my car and it's a little too loud for my taste. I'm thinking about going back to stock.. How much power do you think i'd be losing if i do this. Current mods are Blackwing, FLP headers, 220 cam, ASP pulley and will possibly be changing heads soon. Last dyno'd just a tick under 350 through an unlocked converter. Any thoughts?

Under 10 hp. You might want to look at a calmer cat-back like the Magnaflows. You also might want to consider adding some insulation to your car to quiet it down.

Tried Indys once but they are not as loud as SLP. I worked a deal with Corsa to exchange them for Tourings. They are nice folks, all I had to do is pay for shipping. You will like the Tourings.

I'd go with the Z06 catback. That was my decision. Sounds good but not too loud and weighs 18 lbs less than stock system. Price is right ,too.

They are lightweight, flow better than the regular stock C5 catbacks, and are quite at cruise but really sing when you get on it!

If you want looks then I wouldn't go back to stock. Those things are ugly. Try adding some insulation under the carpet and see how that works. Z06 wouldn't be a bad choise. Kaley

The biggest restriction is from the pre-cats on the mid-pipes. Replace with 2002+ mid-pipes/cats and you will reduce exhaust manifold backpressure by at least 5 mm Hg. Combine with Z06 catbacks and you will gain 5-10 hp, add a blackwing and it will be 15-20.

IMO, I don't think the stock system is as restrictive as some think. Do not buy an exhaust for power. Buy it for sound and look (tips).

Default Cat backs

Go with the Z06 cat backs. Best deal all the way around and you can always recoup the expense when you sell them. You will not regret it. I haven't.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I may start looking at the Corsa tourings. The main reason I got them is because I think the pro tips are one of the better looking tips. The soud wasn't a too much a factor until the cam went it. I did the sound insulation with the frost king stuff and it didn't seem help all that much. So far the only things that seems to work is turning up the radio

I went with the Magnaflow cat back (headers and no cats) They are a little louder than stock at low rpm, NO resonance at all, and Corvette Fever mag. did a test and got approx. 15hp over stock. 4" tips look GREAT!!

I got a used pair, like new, for less than some Z06 TIs. I've seen.

I added a Corsa X-Pipe to quiet the sound. It is supposed to also add 2-3 hp. Something to consider...

Adding an X-pipe will turn the volume down. Enlarging the hole in the H-pipe will likely do the same thing. You can try that first. If it is still to loud you might trade for a Magnaflow. It has a nice low note and is quieter than stock with horsepower to boot.

You'll get a few extra HP staying with aftermarket and the Corsa Touring sounds great! Not too loud at all, and quiet at idle and cruise.

No one has said anything about the Borla Stingers. Are they a bad exhaust. I know they are not quiet, but do they add performance?

Take a look at the Lingenfelter website. They put GHL's on their hottest setups, and have some words about power gains they've experienced with the GHL's (again, on their hottest setups). The GHL Bullets are also resonance-free at cruising speeds. Many good exhausts out there, but the GHL's sold me.

Rumor is the borla's are very similar to GHL's.

Some good suggestions above. I'll weigh in with some of my trial-and-error experience that may or may not help.

I first installed Magnaflows w/ x-pipe at ~500 mi. Excellent V8 baritone. Low volume compared to most aftermarket systems. No resonance with my otherwise stock setup. The Magnaflows are very heavy but thequality is top notch.

I added FLP headers. Mild increase in volume but mostly a sharp, more defined exhaust note.

Added S2 heads and 229/229/112 cam along with VaraRam intake. Very significant increase in volume along with the requisite lope . However, the volume increase was not quite at the levels I expected.

So I swapped the Magnaflows for 2-tip Borla Stingers. Sounded like Saturday night at the track. Very loud, aggressive and in-your-face. Very cool but now I was unable to start the car between 10PM-10AM in my quiet subd for fear the local gendarmes would rain down upon my home. The Stingers are lightweight and look and sound badazz but you gotta' want the badboy sound. No quieting these things with h/c. I loved this setup but it was just too much for me to realistically live with. Plus, the resonance was brain-splitting. What is weird is my wife loved the sound and said she didn't notice the resonance.

Finally swapped the Z06 Ti's in place of the Stingers. Then I added a set of QTP cutouts. So now, I can "have it my way" - either stealth as I creep through the subd late at night or way beyond what the Stingers were on the highway or country backroads where the cows ignore me anyway. Plus, the resonance is almost non-existant.

I've noticed lots of folks back peddling into the Ti's or something milder lately after doing top-end motor work. As I learned, you need to watch what you ask for - you might just get it.

Best of luck in your search.
