Bended push rod and broken spring valve
I have a C5 MN-6 that is producing approximately 500HP (see below signature for mods) at the flywheel. During one of the rides the Vette started to produce this fast metallic noise and some exhaust smoke, I stopped and we tow it back to my garage. After removing the header cover I could see that one of the push rods was sticking out pass the rocker and the spring valve for the same rocker was broken in a half.
My question is ... given the amount of HP that I am running, which push rod/spring valve kit would you recommend so I don't have to deal with this issue again? Also, if you have an indicator for $$$'s, that would be great.
Thanks for your help. M.
Cheap version
CompCam 918 valve springs, $170 springs alone, 250-300 kit. Rated to .600 lift
(Just about everybody carries these)
Expensive version (do it once!):
CompCam 921 dual valve springs- $560 kit including spring seats, titanium retainers and valve locks. Rated to .650 lift.
(Thunder Racing carries these, at that price)
Now, both of these are made to fit the stock LS1/LS6 heads. I do not know if the Cartek heads were machined to accept a different spring, or if they were, if it is an issue. You should give the guys over at Cartek a call on this.
I would definately go with the dual springs. If you break a spring again in the future, chances are it would only be one, and the other would save the collateral damage.
If you are running stock rockers, might be a good time to throw a set of yella terra roller rockers on, or comp is good too. Maybe even a set of 1.75s if you go with the 921 springs.
Disclaimer: Not an expert, just my $.02. Nothing bad to say about Manleys and Iskey's they are good springs also.
Let us know how it works out, and Good Luck!
Forgot to add, though you were probably going to do this anyway, pull and check all those pushrods while you are in there!
