Default ?'s about h/c

I haven't been able to find exactly what knowledge I've been looking for, so here it goes for you guys. I just got into the forum about a month ago, I have no experience with knowledge on the engine. I've been trying to teach myself as I go by asking ?'s. I've learned so much in a month it has been unbelievable. I was wanting to know the difference's on cam sizes (largest to small) (advantages to disadvantages), also on head sizes. Unsure what exactly the #'s mean as far as cams and heads go. Eventually I want to upgrade my engine with h/c, but unsure what all this means. I want to just keep the engine as is without boring, but want to get the most power gains as possible. Also would like to know if upgrading everything around the heads and cam would greatly help. If anyone wants to help me out that would be great or a sight to recommend that could teach me all of this. I would appreciate any information on anything above. I know it's a lot but maybe someone of you guys could take the time. Thanks, Josh

You're already there!

You asked alot of questions and none real specific so I'm not sure how to answer - best thing to do is start with a searc of this site (the new search software rocks compared to the old).

Search for things like
G5X2 or G5X3 (two very popular LG cams these days)
There are alot of other cams too, I'm drawing a blank though
AFR (heads)
Patriot (heads)

As far as cams go, the basic specs are lift (effectively how high far the valve is opened), duration (how long it is open) and lobe separation.

As far as heads go, the basics are flow rates and compression chamber size (which will affect your compression ratio).

This article, about the '02 Z has some good cam discussion and spec talk http://www.idavette.net/hib/02ls6/

Hope this is somewhat helpful. I'm far from an expert compared to some folks on this forum.

Try to locate a tuner in your area or get in touch with some of the great ones on the forum. Some of the Texas tuners and Andy, A&A should be able to steer you in the right direction without you amassing a pile of spare parts.

The absolute most important thing is that everything matches! Whether your using large or small cams, hi flow heads, etc, etc. If your combo (heads, cam, gears, converter if automatic) doesnt focus on the same RPM range your just wasting your time.

If you are looking to have a H/C package installed then you're best bet is to talk to a tuner. Just about all major vette tuners have similar packages making similar hp/tq, so find a tuner that's close to you. That is unless of course you're planning on doing the work yourself, in which case you will need to do a lot research. And if you have any specific questions while you're reseaching post them here on the forum.
