I bought the cold air box from SLP that goes over the Blackwing. I cut the hole in the radiator shoud like it said to. now the car surges going down the road. I talked to a guy and he said it is caused by turblance that the hole created. what can I do about this? Do I need to just buy a new shoud or can this be tuned out with LS1 edit? The box seemed like a good idea but has caused nothing but probs. The car isn't even fun to drive anymore this sucks.

I don't know much about this setup - does the cold air box completely cover the blackwing? Is it sealed to the radiator shroud?

As an example I have the breathless vortex - hole in shroud, box over filter etc. and have no surging.

Is your intack track stock otherwise? Screen on the MAF? Did you check for any air leaks (I'm sure this is dumb but is the first thing you should check with any intake issues).

I don't think LSEdit can do much about this - I would say focus on the filter setup - give some answers to the above and I'm sure the brains on this forum can help!

well it covers the back and sides of the filter. It is supposed to keep engine heat away from the filter and allow it to pull air from the high pressure area infront of the radiator. If you look in from the gap of the hood and front end you can see the filter that area is open. It is almost the shape of a dust pan without the bottom is the best way I can describe it. The hole in the radiator shoud the the size of the filter. traced it and cut it out. we are not running the Z06 screens in the front. I wonder if that would help? also the car has the SLP 85mm MAF (descreened) on it, but it has been reworked with LS1 Edit. It has the black wing filter running to the SLP MAF then the airbridge from West Coast Corvettes with the smooth coupling. and the coolant bypass is done thats everything on the intake tract. If you can think of anything that might help please let me know thanks.

Based on what you've said I'd agree with the comment it's the turbulence. Since the air is basically entering the underhood area there's alot of chance for turbulence. Also, the MAF screen has shown to improve this (over the years people who've removed this have complained of surging). Although, I've not heard of Z06's surging and they have no screen.

Is there any way to seal the box against the shroud? Even temporarily to test it?

well I did some searching and found out the SLP doesn't even sell these anymore. Kind of interesting huh?? I think I'm going to take it off and see if that will help the situation out. I'm thinking it might but right now i'm leaning towards just buying a new radiator shoud. Also if this hole is what causes the prob how does the halltech trap not cause this prob. does it mount in a different way? I can't stand this anymore it is driving me nuts.

You could always just cover the hole you made, some kind of thin not to flimsy material should do .A guy here did that after having the same problem with Daves cold air mod.Funny though I did the same as he did with no problems at all.He has the Blackwing and I have the Halltech.Good luck what ever you do .

You should get a piece of cardboard or very thin plastic and some duct tape and just cover part of the hole you cut. Try it with different amounts and positions of the hole exposed to see if you can get it to stop surging. Several have complained about this but I once read a post where someone solved it with the above method.

00BlkFRC,

Did you get the flat plastic piece that comes with the shroud? I think its the template as well. If so, just install it (and remove the cover) with the two plastic rivets that are provided. That is what I do during monsoon season here in Austin.

Sorry your having troubles. I've run the cover for years with no problems. Good luck

no it didn't come with anything else besides the lid. Did you really notice a gain of having it on? is it really worth all this effort.

Hey there,
Just browsing and read your reply to another topic but THIS section of your reply concerns me, since I WAS about to finally remove the front screen on my 85 MAF (Removed the rear screen ages ago to no detriment...Can you give me any more substantiated input re this?
Or is this surging when removing screens generic to Z06's?

Don't throw anything away. Try this first, put your stock MAF back in and see if this doesn't fix your problem. If you have it dyno'd most will want you to put the stock MAF back in anyway.
