I want to replace the stock gear shift **** on my Z06 with something a little nicer, however, I have several dumb questions! Does the stock **** just simply unscrew? Does it have some type of locking nut (that needs to be loosened prior to removal) to keep it oriented in the proper position? Is it right or left handed threads and does the shifter require a "back-up" so no damage is done to the linkage?
Will the aftermarket ***** for Hurst and Breathless type shifters (similar to the ones in Eckler's and Mid America catalogs) fit the stock shifter's threads? I'd really prefer just a black round ball with the 6-speed pattern embossed on it.....any suggestions or places to look. Thanks in advance.
Look in the Tech Tips section (under the Other tab). I'm pretty sure I saw a write-up on removing the manual shift ****. There is a key (like a cotter key) that you have to pull out the top before you can unscrew it.

First you want to pry off the plastic cap with a small screw driver. Once this is complete you will see a rectangular piece on metal (looks like a lead plug)...this is locking device. you will need to get a needle nose vice grip or similar to clamp on, then take a large screw driver and place above the plug in the V if the vice grip. You can then use the screwdriver as a lever to wedge the plug out. I comes straight out.
Just take your time!
They have plain white and black ones. The ones for the Corvette use a larger thread than the ***** you will find in the catalogs like the Hurst *****, t-handles, etc. Flame ball has one that directly fits and they feel good (the weight is nice) and it does not get hot in the summer. They are acrylic or somekind of hard poly plastic.
