Yes, I know that, but it's my understanding they started using the new LS6 block in 2001. However, there was a change-over date so I don't believe all 2001 non-Z06's had the LS6 block (not the LS6 cam, heads, etc.).
There's a machined area on the block deck just in front of the passenger side head. On an LS6 block the machined out portion is larger than on an LS1. Sorry, I don't have any pictures, but if you look at a 2002 and later car, and compare it to a 2000 and earlier car, you'll see the difference.
As stated, if it is a 2001, it should have a new (LS6) block. My 2001 TransAm built in the first week of October had a new block. I imagine that the Corvettes were switched over by then as well. I personally haven't seen a 2001 yet with an old block and I've seen quite a few!
Go ahead and check it, but I am almost positive all 2002 model year cars have the LS6 block casting. The switch went in late in 2001 model year production. My 6/01 build date '01 MY car had the LS6 block casting.
