Default roller rocker / valve cover clearance

finally got around to installing compcams 1.85 roller rockers today. everything was going along very nicely until time came to install the valve covers..
both sides had interference problems.....on the left side, the adjusting nuts were hitting the pcv baffle
on both sides the casting dimples for the coil mounting bracket bolt bosses were hitting the rockers

so i called comp cams to see what they had to say ...
the response from their cam help hotline expert was i think someone makes spacers to give more clearance, but did not know who or where to get them

needed to get the job done now ,so out came the old die grinder
twenty minutes later both covers were no longer hitting on anything.

finished the rest the job with no other problems

gotta love modding......

dont you think that comp cams would make the components necessary to install their products.. i am very disappointed with the knowledge and helpfulness of the cc hotline... dont waste your time calling if you have a problem with a product of theirs... just get out the old....................................

MTI used a grinder to 'fit' my Jesel 1.8s too ... said they do it all the time.

I had this same discussion with Comp 2 years ago. I took special exception because Comp claimed in thier documentation, and on a presentation on the Speed Channel that they were bolt on with no modifications necessary.

I took it down to my local guy, to make sure I was doing everything right because when I called Comp's tech line, they still stated no mods should be necessary. My local shop told me this happens all the time and they had modified valve covers in this fashion before and it should be no problem. I'm a Network Engineer by trade, and no one would ever get away that kind of bogus claim in my trade, but I digress. After looking at the cost of spacers ($249) or tall valve covers ($500) I decided to let them grind on it. Worked great!

The only reasonable explanation of this I can come up with is maybe on the 97-98s with perimeter valve cover bolts, modification wasn't necessary, and they were working off that example, and did not know the 99s+ valve covers had changed. Still have to pull pcv baffle though, hmm. If anyone with a 97-98 has any experience on this, chime in.

Let me say however, that other than this snag, I have been completely satisfied with Comp on everything I have bought with them, and their tech line really helped with getting my cam degree'd in. First class outfit!

There are pics on my site (link in sig) of those modifications, front page.

my issue was that they were stated to fit without any modification...they know that there is a problem hitting on valve cover...they should state that some modification may be necessary to clear properly... and give a diagram of what needs to be done...

that said , i also like their products and think they perform very well

Cartek similarly modified my valve covers to fit over a Jesel rocker setup, which led to big oil ingestion problems through the PCV system. The fix was a switch to the LS6 PCV setup, in conjunction with the usual in-line air compressor filter.

my car is a 98, i have 5.3l heads on it.. when i made the switch i had to modify my pcv to work with the center bolt valve covers.. made some fittings and modified some lines and all seemed to be working fine
i definetly have concerns now about removing the baffle from the left cover... i was working on some type on baffling in the left cover fitting..[ steelwool/ foam]...kinda like the breathers of days gone by...
guess i need to check out the ls6 valley cover pcv setup...
