When you order a new front skid bar/radiator support are they supposed to come with the bolts/brass inserts already in the bar? I just picked one up and it has no bolt inserts and as far as I can see they need to be installed when they build the crash bar....

Big surprise, huh? The one I bought had no inserts, either. It was an original part in a box labeled "Made in Canada". Mine was not painted, still in bare metal gray with lousy welds. I went to my local full service paint store and bought a "Nutsert" kit, about $80., and installed inserts in all the holes. The Nutserts are USS thread, and your old bolts are metric, so buy replacement bolts to suit. Apply a couple coats of black Rustoleum, and your skid bar is just the way it should have been prepared at the factory. By the way, I have a once-used Nutsert kit for sale at significant discount. Save the wave.
According to my parts book the bar does not come with the inserts. If I am looking at the diagram correctly, then 6 inserts are required. They are all GM# 11515638 and are sold ten to a package. GM Parts Direct will sell you a package of ten for $11.15 shipped
Right, the bars do not come with the nutserts. Also, I believe there are two sizes of nutserts needed, but I'll have to double check. In any event, its a pain in the butt trying to get the nutserts seated. I used an old bolt with a nut. Thread the bolt into the nutsert (while its installed in the crash-bar) with the nut installed on the bolt. Then tighten the nut so that the bolt will sort of pull on the nutsert and cause it to seat or mushroom out. Sorry if that sounds confusing but IM me if you need more info.
PS I had to sand my bar down very well with 600 grit and it was still hard to get the primer to stick. Spend the extra time and strip it well or it will chip and peel very easily.
There's two different sizes of nutserts. You may also want new radiator pads. I got all new hardware, to include the bolts that attach it to the frame, and the screws and nut-thingies for the AIR pump and horn.
When ordering from GM Parts Direct some things come in packages, so you'll have a few spare hardware bits:
What is the part number and cost for the new skid bar? I bought my FRC used and the previous owner must have had regular arguments with parking curbs as they are pretty beat up and scratched. That and the flex air dams have been something I have been wanting to replace since I got the car. Thanks.
