Am planning to replace clutch assembly[FlyWheel/Disc/Pressure Plate] along with slave cyl in the near future with New GM OEM parts in my 1998.Are the weights from the original flywheel to be transfered to the new replacement flywheel? I have hear info both ways>to tranfer and not to transfer.what is correct?
The new assembly will be balanced, and will be marked so that you install them balanced. ie, the pressure plate and flywheel need to be installed in the same arrangement as they come to you. Obviously, the clutch inside spins and does not need to maintain any orientation
This is a much debated issue. The service manual says that if you replace the flywheel, any weights attached to it must be transferred to the new one. It is true that the stock flywheel and pressure plate are balanced as a unit and weights are added to the holes in the pressure plate to even it out, but on some of the earlier LS1's weights were added to the flywheel to compensate for imbalances in the engine even though the LS1 is internally balanced. (At least this is my understanding). So, if you have no weights on your flywheel then zero balance the replacement flywheel and pressute plate as a unit and slap it on. If you do have weights attached to your flywheel then they should be added to the new flywheel in the same position. While the flywheel can go on any way, there is an additional offset hole in the crank end and flywheel that can be used for orientation. So, assuming you have no vibration in your stock setup, the current best approach if you have weights on your flywheel is to take off the stock unit, have it spun and see how far out of balance it is and what orientation it is out of balance. Then, zero balance your new unit and add the same amount of imbalance to the new unit. Again, if you have no weights, zero balance the new unit and bolt it on.
Personally, I did not transfer anything. Really couldn't anyway. Took off the factory flywheel (with weights) and put on my balanced Exedy setup and it has ZERO vibration. I was a little nervous about it but the exedy flywheel doesn't couldn't have taken the same weights anyway (different size holes if I remember).

Have the balance checked on your old F/W and PP as assembled in the car and then have the new one balanced the same way and you can't go wrong.
Do not assume it is zero balanced!
If you can't get the balance checked then by all means transfer the weights if there are any.......
