Last night I installed the 160 degree thermostat I purchased from tbyrne. Prior to this the vehicle would run at 194 to 198 degress. Now, even in 100 degree heat, the vehicle runs at 178 to 182 degrees. I have a Hayden fan kit on the vehicle.
I understand that there is much discussion concerning operating temperatures. I am more comfortable now then before - really wasn't looking for or expecting any performance gain.
I installed a 170 T-Stat and it runs around 187 on a high 90 day.
From what I was told it ok to run a lower temp but not to low on the LS-1. What is to low, I don't know. But I also like seeing the low temp over the normal 198+ when driving on the turnpike.
I also run a 160* stat with temps down to 178*. It will be too low in the winter, perhaps 170*. I plan on installing a 180* when they become available.
there is no benefit to running your engine cooler, and it probably increase emmisions. If you were doing track events, the extra cooling is nice, but no real benefit for a street car.
I will probablly purchase one of these to help keep the temps down.
I have seen as much as a 15rwhp swing on the dyno going from 180 temps to 200+ temps.
My car is very heat sensitive.

It is very sensitive to air intake NOT engine temp. I have been to two dynos, Each owner/operator said the same thing and the results to prove it. The LSx produces the most power with a hot engine... cool intake...
This was proven on my first dyno run when I got there early so it would be cool for the first run... It ran better on its 3rd pull when it was up to operating temps and then some....
