Default problems with modified radiator shroud please help.....

well i cut the radiator shroud to allow cool air to reach the air intake...i feel an increase in horse power, however my engine does not seem to run as smoothly...when accelerating all is fine...but on deceleration or idle the engine seems to jerk....mostly on the highway..so i figured it could be wind turbulence causing uneven air flow to the engine...is this correct...well im going to cover the hole and see again...ill repost the results...........

I think you could be right. What type of air filter/ intake device do you have?

Intake air flow is critical. The stock air box has an oval outlet facing the MAF as an example. Also the MAF screen should be left in for proper operation.

Unless you modified something else, a little cooler air is not going to do anything that the computer can not adjust for. Your problem is probably that you did not get the air bridge back correctly and you have a leak, or you broke or left loose a wire (unlikely if you are not throwing codes).

Just put your stock airbox back on the car and it cures the problem then you know your car doesnt like the blackwing. You can buy a K&N filter for your stock box for $55 and install it. Then your car will run smooth and still have the power you gained from the blackwing.

I put in the haltech stinger and did a variation of dave's cool air intake mod. I couldnt find the screen he used but found an alum multi louvered soffit vent with screen on one side. I cut the holes to match the 3 rows of louvers and oreinted the louvers so it looks llike a bunch of mini scoops. I didnt put on the bigwall pocket scoop as I didnt really care about the possible ram effect at this point.. The car idles very smooth and I havent had any codes or problems. I cant feel any specific increase from it alone as I did the kooks and haltech at the same time. All of it together works great. I cant wait for the dyno day to see what it all produces. I agree you may have a leak at the coupler near the throttle body. Especially if you still have the stock accordian. Ive heard of those cracking. Ive also tried the stock airbox with a K&N and a z06 airbox with additional holes and not had problems with any of the variations. The air filter should even out any air turbulence I would think I dont see how that should affect it maybe your computer is compensating for the change. Some times it takes a bit for it to learn.

it is not the cold air your computer is not adjusting for - it is the turbulence. This has been reported many many times over the years - most notably when someone removes the MAF screen (although in fairness it hasn't ever really been figured out why the Z06 with no screen to begin with doesn't have the problem, but regardless over the years it has correlated well in my mind).

As others have said, the flow characterisitcs are important for the MAF to correctly register all airflow. And as vetterdstr mentioned, I have seen this issue reported most frequently over the years with a blackwing/cut shroud combo. I'm not sure if it is the filter shape or what...

The problem with just cutting a hold in the shrould is that it does allow more turbulent air. I'm not starting an intake war, but this is one reason I went with one of the intakes with a sealed box over the filter. Cold air, and predictable pressure under the shrould and even flow through the filter - never had a problem - so along those lines, I think they do sell a cover for the blackwing - maybe that would help?

FWIW, the Blackwing works great as long as yu don't cut the shroud and you can remove the MAF screen but you must compensate for the additional airflow with tuning
