I don't smoke, but I *do* want to have my laptop plugged in. I checked the fuse, its fine. Anyone have an idea how to diagnose where the faulty wire/connection is?
My outlet didn't work either so I removed the console and juggled the connection some. Now it works. I think this is a poor connector GM used for this outlet.
Very easy to get to. I can have mine off in 5 minutes. Course, I've done it 20 times but it's an easy task. It's very possible it's that connector because it's one of the worst I've seen. It's very flimsy and can pop off easily, especially if it's ever been off before.

OK. I will check that out. Is there any DIY info on removing the console?
Thanks! (Also, there is a plug in the center console/arm rest I noticed. That one doesn't work either)
You shouldn't have to take the shift **** off. Just pull out the shifter boot from the top and the console can be twisted out of it. I doubt you will even have to remove the console all the way to get behind the outlet connector.
I had the same problem a few years back and I recall there being 2 fuses, one for the 12v plug in the center storage console and one for plug next to the ash tray. I think the one I had to replace was located in a fuse box in the passenger footwell.
RockinC5 may have nailed it. I remember popping one of those fuses when I shorted something on my shifter while putting in my cutout switch in the console.
Its a fuse most likely. I've had to replace mine twice.
Only plug in electronics AFTER the car is started (radar detector in my case) because if plugged in during startup, you are more likely to get a surge which blows the fuse.

OK. This is ringing a bell. I believe the one I checked was in the engine compartment? (Going stricly from 3+ month memory which is always a bad thing).
Thanks, I will dig around some more and check more fuses!
Fuse #7 in the footwell was blown. Ack, I shoulda checked #11 while there. I could have SWORN I checked this before and it wasn't, but I will replace it and see what happens. Any chance the actual cigarette plug is bad and causing it to short as soon as it's pushed in?
