help please 1286/1287 DIC codes
Hope somebody can help. I have a 99 C5 2with 11k miles on it. This past weekend, the DIC showed messages saying "service active handling" , service soon, blah blah blah. I did a scan, and codes 1286 and 1287 came up. I've reset them a few times, and they continue to re-apear, telling me the problem is real. It only happens when I drive slow (under 30 mph) the error does not seem to happen at highway speeds.
This sort of tells me I have a bad steering wheel sensor. Where is this thing, how hard is to to change? what does it cost? Is this something I can do myself, or trust the local gm tech?

It's a sensor at the bottom of the steering column that requires the column removal to replace. You can do it yourself - there are some archived threads that detail this - or you can take it to the dealer. It's not cheap... This is the sensor that tells the active handling what position your steering wheel is in in case you get out of control and the computer needs to take over...
