I have a 99 with Vararam, LS6 intake, Kooks headers and dyno tuning. The car also has the 3.15 axle. Looking to add a converter. Will be staying with the 3.15 gears. I was thinking of going with the Yank 3000. What do you guys think? I drag race the car and use drag radials. Will I need a tranny cooler and should I do a shift kit as well?
The Yank 3000 is a very good choice with 3.15 gears. You should get decent performance and good driveability with this combo. However if you plan on doing a cam only or H/C down the road I would recommend a converter with more stall I would go with at least 3500 stall and 3.42 gears minimum. A cooler is always a good idea with a high stall converter, just call it cheap insurance.
Just out of curiosity why no gears. Make sure the decision you make is the final one. There are a ton of guys on here who have done converter and gears a couple of times because they didnt go tall enough to begin with.
I don't want the car to be a sub 12 second car. I feel if I go with more stall and 3.42's I will be in the high 11's. Don't want to put in a roll bar.
The NHRA recently changed the rules you can now run 11.50 max without installing a roll bar. Check your local track to see if they have adopted the latest rules.
How about the Yank SS3200? If not, the Yank 3000 will be fine. Btw, gears make hardly any difference if you have a high stall converter. You'd have to go to 3.73's or 3.90's to have a noticeable gain from the 3.15's after installing a high stall. 3.42's will just make it feel nice and tight.

I'm running a Yank SY3500 w/3.42's and the TransGo.
No complaints here with those components. I also added
a Tranny cooler and a deeper pan. Temps never get over
185 in the hottest Florida Sun or running it hard for a bit.
There is a love-hate attitude on the TransGo. First both
Yank and I think FLP recommend against it. Others feel
that with proper tuning(software) the same results can
be achieved. In technical terms, maybe, but I've driven
both type-cars with my set-up minus the TransGo and
there is definitely a SOTP difference. So, to each is own.

I know that Yank doesn't like the shift kits, but I didn't know FLP didn't too. I just put an FLP level IV trans, with the same converter gear set-up that you've got in, and I asked Chuck about the shift kit, and he said that he puts them in their trannies. YOu can really tell too, because it hits HARD AND QUICK going into second! Personally, myself, I'd rather change line pressures mechanically (shift kit), than through the PCM.
Gears will tighten up a looser converter, and I really like my SY3500, and it isn't hard to live with at all (looseness is a mater of taste though). If you're dead set against changing gears too, and are set on Yanks, then I'd say the SS3200 would be what you want, but you might want to talk to Mike@ Yank. He'd steer you in the right direction. Good Luck!
