My passenger side mirror is falling off. After removing the actual mirror piece (Didn’t even know they were heated) I found the culprit, a little clip had come off the shaft. Now here is the real problem….. That spring looks much like a valve spring, and has about as much force. I can’t find any way to compress that spring down. I took off the door panel, but I can’t readily get access to the bolts that attach it to the car….
Anyone have any tips or advice in fixing this?

Took it off the car and I am sending it to E.H. Swaneck for repairs.
The trick to getting the mirror off the car was
1) Take the door panel off
2) Roll down the window
3) Take the outside weather strip off. (Have to pull it back and it just comes off)
4) Take the speaker pod out
5) Reach behind and get the wires to the mirror loose. Then unhook the connectors (2 of them)
6) Using a 10 mm wrench take the 3 nuts off holding the mirror on.
That's it. Took me no more than 10 mins to get the thing off.
When I worked on mine, I determined some of the mirrors were not being assembled properly. There is a small grove around the shaft that the retainer clip should be pressed down far enough to hook behind. If the clip isn't pressed on thar far, the spring can push the clip back off the end of the shaft.
To repair, remove the wires from the center of the shaft, position a bushing that fits on top of the retainer clip and around the outside of the shaft, put a washer on top of the bushing, stick a 1/4" threaded rod up through the shaft and put a nut on the end as it comes through the washer. You then need to block the bottom end of the shaft and put a nut on the bottom of the 1/4" shaft and tighten until the spring is compressed enough to get the clip below that little grove on the shaft. Remove all the foreign parts you used, put the wires back through the shaft and reinstall the mirror. Now, Time to hit the road
Just got my Mirror back from Ed - About a week turn around -4 days were UPS to Ohio and back - so pretty good. Ed faxed me a set of instructions to pull the door panel - took 15 minutes the first time 5 the second. Ed did a great job! He replaces the pot metal shaft with a machined steel one, new retainers and completely assembles. Just bolt back on. $60 well spent - better than a new one and a lot less $$. I'd recommend Ed to anyone with the broken mirror feature!
i was able to compress the spring and get the clip back on, but i'm not sure how long it will last. Hopefully at least til winter so i can send it to ed without any down time
