Do vendors sell torque plates (for honing cylinder bores) for LSx engines? Does any LSx engine builders use them? My local machine shop has never honed a LSx engine so I was just wondering......
I am no expert on boring and honing but I can offer some things to think about.
I have read in a few places that when GM designed the LSx blocks they intentionally placed the threads for the head bolts deep in the lower webbing of the block. This was done primarialy, it said, to reduce the kind of cylinder distortion that was so common with previous small block designs.
After reading this, and I don't remember exactly where I read it, I wondered just how much distortion was reduced? I bet ya some of the boys on the ls1 tech forum can answer that question.
If they have never done one of these motors before, then be careful. These blocks are not honed the same way as conventional small blocks; you don't hone to get a nice cross-hatched pattern. The finished bore on these motors should look like a mirror finish.
I haven't heard anything about torque plates for them. Maybe one of the vendors/tuners will speak up here.
