I'm running 93 octane (Citgo), and get noticeable pinging under WOT. Would a better grade of gas help? I also read a thread in the Scan and Tune section where “flashing the PCM” was mentioned as a solution.
There have been other posts about gas quality and high temperatures. You may have to try a tank of different brands to get the results you want. If you're running stock thermostat and fan settings, you may be getting high head temps in traffic (210+) that will cause detonation and the knock you hear. Worst part of the knock is the reduced power that the computer gives you when it compensates for the knock.
Bottom line, change gas stations to see if it helps, then if you have the ability, change temp thresholds, which is more difficult - thermostat and edits.
Hey, your coupe is identical to mine in its setup, just on the other side of the country!
Another thing to keep in mind is that gas loses it's octane over time. So if you don't drive your car daily, and you've got gas that is a few weeks old, this can increase the chances of detonation. I used to get detonation on my old 98 LS1 Firebird if my gas was two weeks old or more, but as soon as I filled up with fresh Sunoco 94 the detonation would go away.
