Default Noise happens at WOT

Yesterday I discoveerd that when I punch it, I hear what sounds to be like a metal clacking noise. The noise just clacks once or twice and it sounds like its coming from the right rear, somewhere aound the exhaust area, but I'm not sure. It only happens at WOT, mostly in the lower gears. It also only happens when the car in motion. I tried revving the car in park and I do not hear it. Its definitely a metal sounding noise though and it does sound like a "pipe" noise.

Any ideas?

check your x pipe leading towards the catback... probably at the closest point to the tranny.

if you have an aftermarket, the fit could be tight near the tranmissmission and under WOT when the engine/drivetrain twists, then the pipe is most likely hitting the tranny for that moment.

if it is happening then you should see a little mark on the pipe where it rubs.

if the pipes are held together with clamps then a readjust is in order.

another sign would be your exhaust tips are not level.

Dont have an X pipe and the Tips are pretty level. But I'll check for marks. I've had the GHL's for 2 years and if it is exhaust related, then this is the first time I'm hearing the noise I described.

Thanks for your input

I had that EXACT problem on a 89 Camaro. Turned out to be a big problem with the transmission. If u are TT then u might have too much power for hte drivetrain, and might be time for an upgrade??????

Well, i guess you could be right but that might be a first with a Lingenfelter Package affecting an MN6. And they dont recommend mN6 upgrades, just either clutches or A Tranny Upgrade if you have an A4.

Heck, I still have the same same Z06 clutch and I've had the package for 2 years. But I guess anything can happen.

I got a good look underneath today. Dont see anything. The right muffler part does have some movement up and down though.

The more I drive and listen to the noise the more it sounds like some hollow rattling in a pipe at the right side to the end of the car. I hear 2-3 rattles at WOT. I tell ya, its a bit risky to test WOT in this car. I usually make a few passes to look for cops.

Anyway, happens in 1st (I typically never go WOT in 1st cause of traction), 2cnd and it gets harder to replicate in 3rd and I cant get it to do it in 4th or higher. I think its defintely related to back pressure but then again, it could be something else - something more serious but I hope not.

Diamantle your exhaust system (in the back) and see if you dont have a large chunk of (whatever) rolling around in there...

I've seen that too. Either a loose baffle or some foreign object that rattles around at high rpm/WOT.

i have the same exact problem. its NOT the tranny. i thought it was a loose baffle in my corsa exhaust. i sold the exhaust for next to nothing thinking that would solve the problem. i got brand new ti exhaust and the sound is Still there.

meanwhile, my tranny went out on me and i had a new level IV rodney unit put in. sound is still there.

the sound started soon after i installed the higher flowing 02 cats. and now looking at them, i can see that the weld job didnt come out perfectly level. the cause is more than likely the pipe hitting somewhere under the car. and a very minute chance its some loose weld inside the down pipe.

it sounds just like striking a flag pole with a screwdriver tip. and only at wot or close to wot take off in 1-3rd gear.

i havent had a chance to take it to a muffler shop to get it fixed but hopefully i will soon.
