after reading some recent threads about oil pressure issues I decided to check mine a little closer.I found mine to be quite a bit lower than it apparently should be.
At idle I am around 15 psi and during my drive to work it never really got above 25 psi.
My car is a'98 6 speed with about 40,000mi/65,000km.
I also purchased an extended, non GM warrenty that covers basically everything down to brake lines and calipers.
I need some ideas as to the cause of the low readings and whether or not I can claim this cost under warranty.
I am running the proper oil,and capacity.
The most common cause of low oil pressure is a bad o-ring at the oil pump intake port. Also, 97-00 oil pumps fail randomly and need to be replaced. Your pressures ARE low. I have a 99 and the oil pressure at idle is 37lbs. I would have that looked at asap. You could end up spinning a bearing especially when the motor gets hot and the oil thins out. There are a bunch of other things that could cause this but I would get it to a mechanic.
My borther had the same problem with his 98 couple years ago.
he thought nothing of it and 2 weeks later he blew the motor!
I wuold get it looked at NOW!!
Molson...
Refer to my thread 'Low Oil Pressure'...at least you got a nice response from ArKay99. My Z06 has only 10,000 miles so I'm taking it to a GM shop soon. Today it idled at 23 psi and 37 psi at 2500 rpm but that's still low. I think it should be about 10 psi higher.
Thanks for your responses everyone
I have to get this checked out!
My only other issue is if it will be done under warranty or whether I will foot the bill.My warranty stetes that it covers any internal engine part that the oil comes in contact with.I will keep you guys posted with any results
P.S Itried the search function but it gave no usefull info.
