I had the same problem. Sounded like suspension to me too. Couldnt figure it out for the life of me. Finally figured it out (may or may not be your problem); I'm 6'2" to I have to have my seat all the way back, well when certain forces go certain ways, like reverse, then it transfers the weight in the seat towards the back, the seat makes contact with the underpaneling of the car, and transfers a pop sound right when it feels like its the suspension. Havent figure what to do about it, just know its there now, so i prepare myself. Let me know if this helps, again it might not, but your thoughts sounded just like mine when I was having the problem, and I checked all my bolts in the suspension and nothing....
The right rear of my car is making a thunk when I'm driving straight or when I turn left...but not all of the time. It isn't easy to repeat. The sound might happen two or three times and that's it. However I can't feel anything when I hear the sound.
If you don't mind playing with a torque wrench, I'd use David Farmer's torque sheet and torque all the bolts in the front and rear suspension to spec. I did it on mine, and I found that almost half the bolts in the rear weren't torqued anywhere near spec. My dealership is the last place that touched the rear end while fixing a leaky diff. I had the thunk going backwards like you described it, but also while going forwards. The torque wrench fixed the thunk.
