I've been thinking about getting a Hypertech for my 98 convertible. I really like the fact that it changes the automatic transmission shift points. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has used a Power Programmer and what they think of it. Is the performance difference worth the money?
They are what they are......what mods are you planning??
If you are planning doing heads and cam then don't bother..just get LS-1 done.....if your are doing minor bolt ons..headers exhaust, blackwing ...new t-stat etc. then yeah...and you can pick one up here used for like $150...
I see you're a newbie, welcome to the forum. If you are just getting aquainted with the performance capabilities and available mods for the C5 then the HPP III is agood start. You can play with the options to see how the car responds without you doing any damage. You can always revert to the stock settings. BUT, UNDOUBTEDLY, as you get to know the car, you will at some point want to graduate to bolt-on mods and more serious programming. Then its time for the 'edits' programmers. Do not attempt 'edits' unless you know what your doing. Good luck with MOD FEVER.
Yep, I'm a newbie. I've already gotten some incredibly beneficial feedback. My vette is 100% stock right now. I am definitely going to do some mods. I'll probably stick to minor bolt ons since I drive the car everyday. Thanks for the feedback.

100% stock? You should get something from the PPIII. I wanted the shift points and ability to change fan settings for a 160 stat. If you add some common mods (intake and exhaust), Hypertech support will not validate any gain whatsoever--their numbers are based on bone stock. While I like the shift points and fan settings, would trade it for a Predator in a second....assuming Predator made one for the '98.
The Hypertech is ok, if your changing gears it will recalibrate the speedo or you can raise your shift points. If your going to start mods you should get one that will change as you go. I use the Vinci Programmer and it is a great tool, it contains 6 programs for different levels of mods, it allows you the option to change the timing and fuel curves by plus or minus 15%, saves your stock program and allows you to read and erase codes. PPIII's work on VIN number to prevent them from being used by more than one vehicle. You must return a car to stock before PPIII can be used on another car.
As long as your car is stock, that's about all the HPPIII is good for. Once you start doing some of the more common mods, you might need to move onto something more powerful.
