I was just wondering how hard is it to install a cam on a 99 c5, i've heard some people say that you have to pull the motor others say it is relativly simple. so whats the deal can you change the cam with the motor in the car or do you have to pull the whole motor. The chevy dealer by me wanted to change the cam and they said they would charge me 800 bucks to do the labor, and they were going to pull the motor so i was going to see if anyone knows if you can get the work done any cheaper if they can change it with the motor still in the car.
what kind of cam would be best for me to go with i didn't wanna modify anything else.
currently have 3.42 gear, headers, cat back system, cai, and computer tuning.
The cam can be simple. You have to watch the lifters. Most of the time they stay up in the holders, but they do fall from time to time. The engine stays in the car. The radiator and AC condenser needs to come out. As far as specialty tools go, damper removal and install tools, and front cover alignment tool. The other thing to consider is the valve springs will also need to be upgraded. So you will need a valve spring compressor.
I would plan on two to three days work for a beginner. Good luck with your project and if I can be of help email or give me a call. davebusch@cartek.net
this link will give you great instructions... you can make the call if you want to do it yourself or have it done.... with any moderate cam you will need to upgrade your valve springs...
