Unless your car is modified don't run a 160 thermostat, thats too cool these engines were engineered to run hotter and running too cool not only causes higher emissions but will stress your engine
i did install a 160 last week but i guest the car has to be moving
I hear you about the running hotter than h$!! deal. Mine used to creep up into the 235 territory and that made me nervous until I heard other guys tell me it is normal for a stock set-up.
Changing your T-Stat has minimal effect unless you've programmed your fans to a lower setting. GM has them set to kick in at 235 degrees or when the AC is turned on.
Cartek put in a 160 for me and programmed my fans to kick in at 165.
On days that are between 80-90 degrees, my coolant temp is between 190-195 which is supposed to be optimal for engine performance.
All the t-stat does is open the coolant flow valve at a lower temp. Stock is somewhere near 190. The upper temp is normally control by the fans which come on near 230 stock, so those temps in hot, stop and go traffic with little to no airflow through the radiators are normal.
Very easy to install. I know I found the instructions on this forum in one of the posts. If you wish I'd be pleased to e-mail the instructions which I saved. The only confusing part (if you can call it that) is whether you want the fan to continue running after the ingntion is off (default which I choose). That runs the risk of running the batter down. Mine is a daily driver in DC and I've never had a problem. The sensor just pushes between the fins in the lower driver side of the radiator and the relay is in parallel with the power to one of the fans. So if the aftermarket relay fails the stock controls take over. It is also easily adjustable.
mine was running that hot even with the 160 thermostat and the LS1 edit which turned the fans on at a lower temp., MTI ended up changing out the radiator with a used one and now even in a summer in Houston it does not get above 205 and stays around 190 typically which is where they say the LS1 likes to run.
