Default a/c won't engage???

The Air Conditioning on my 98 C5 with electronic / dual zone climate control will not engage. Press the a/c button, it flashes a few times, & nothing. Fan operates though. Just turned 46,000 miles. Thanks in advance for your responses.

What is your outside temp. reading? If the sensor is bad and outside temp is too low, A/C won't engage. Other possibility is low coolant in A/C (i.e. - leak).

RCK1999:

Thanks for the reply. The outside temp is reading -32F. It is actually in the upper 70's. So, by your reply, it sounds like the sensor is bad. Do you happen to know where this is located? And, is this a relatively easy task of unplugging the defective one and plugging in the new one? Your replies are appreciated.

Actually this is good news, because the outside air sensor is an easy DIY fix. Your biggest challenge is to locate it. The easiest way to see it is to lay down at the front of your car and look up into the radiator shroud on the passanger side. Right down at the bottom you will see a little cut-out with a small pencil-thin plastic tip sticking through the shroud less than an inch. That is the sensor. Pop the hood and reach down to grasp the sensor. Its held in place by a plastic pin. It's an easy "un-plug the old, plug in the new" swap-out. It's an $8 part from the dealer (you can find it cheaper on-line, but they kill you on shipping). The part is called an outside ambient air temperature sensor.

If the external sensor reports less than around 36F, it prevents the A/C from kicking in. The easiest short term fix is to unplug the sensor ( as per directions above). The external temp should default to around 58F which will allow the A/C to work. But check the connector for corrosion since that could cause a short circuit (vs. open) and prevent the temp from defaulting.

I just replaced my ambient temperature sensor on my 98. It should've been an easy fix, but the connector was so corroded that I had to replace it too. The sensor cost around $14 and the pigtail connector cost around $24. Once you replace the part, you have to drive the car for a few minutes (above 40 mph) before the new sensor correctly reads the external temp. Good luck.
