Squeeling/chirping noise coming from engine...please help
Just yesterday this noise starting happening from under the hood, sounds like a belt but I am not sure.
I called a local dealer, they said it could be sand getting in a belt and making the noise, they said it is pretty common in south florida but this has never happened to me before in 60,000 miles.
Does this sound like it could be sand or something more serious? I can hear it at idle and also when cruising...almost sound like crickets are under the hood...
This is a problem that plagued my 2000 vert!!! Two seperate dealers tried numerous times and couldn't provide a long-term fix. I asked GM's Dave Peacy about it and the new belts that GM installs has kevlar strands instead of nylon. The way it breaks down is that once at operating temperature the Harmonic Balancer being metal gets extremely HOT. When you turn the engine off, the part of the belt that is on the HB also gets HOT and the strands crystalize. The more you drive/stop, the worse it gets and it eventually gets to be a continuous squeak.
I finally went down to a Main Auto Parts store and bought a non-kevlar Dayco belt and installed it after cleaning all of the pullies... NO MORE SQUEAK!!!
Give that a try... If you are close to 60K miles it is due to be replaced. AND, buy NO means, are you to put any belt dressing on it!!! it only makes it worse!
The drive belt tensioner is a common failure, unfortunatly the right fix for this is to replace both the tensioner and the idler pully.
one will ruin the other,,, many people replace the tensioner and 6 months later they have a problem again... squeak chirp etc. if you replace the tensioner you should replace the idler..
the AC belt system has the same setup but they rarely fail.

I have had the sqeeling/chirping problem, and I replaced the AC tensioner, and the whole idler pulley, and the sound is gone! May want to try a Gatorback belt first, as it sometimes can be the belt!! Goodluck! Jason
