How difficult is it to replace my brake pads, myself? obviously I'm not a mechanic, but I would like to do this myself. I do have a lift and jack stand and necessary equipment. Is this something i should try to tackle myself? any special advice?
The hardest thing is getting the bolts loose because your working in a tight space. Use the longest rachet you have or a cheater bar. There's only two bolts that hold on the calipers but you have to use a open end wrench to hold the nut to get the bolt out. Use a C clamp to compress the calipers as far as they will go. The pads will come out easily. After everything is back together just pump the brake pedal a few times to push the callipers back against the pads tight.
I'm definately not a mechanic either and have painted my calipers, changed the pads and took off the rotors and had them turned for way less than some place would charge me to do it. Oh, I also changed out plugs and wires, not as bad as people say it is. I do have a shop of large tools for working on tractors though so it helped.
