Default MAF resistor?

When I bought my '97 I found the previous owner had put some sort of electronic resistor into the un-plugged MAF wire to somehow fool the computer.
Can anyone explain this to me?
Thanks for any help.

It tricks the computer to thinking it is always around 40 degrees out, depending on what size resistor was there. The computer changes the A/F, some call it the timming tricker mod.

Well I first read about it in LS1TECH.COM. There is a Post by [B][U]GuitsBoy 07/26/03 under the Power Development>>External Engine,,,Maf Resistor MOD. I did it to my Vette because I bought it in Dallas, TX and then drove it to Arizona where my home sits at 4200 feet of elevation. So I noticed that the car was very lean here. After the MOD the vehicle went from about 24 miles per gallon to about 15 mpg. So I took it out again. I guess the computer adjusted and now I am getting good gas mileage and the car is not lean anymore. Maybe the Vette learned something About increase in HP I do not know, all I know is that the car was working RICH. Also all the pinging the vehicle had went away completely.
