Next week I am going to change my 2:73 gear to 3:? gear. Right now my 2003 Coupe is bone stock. Any recommendations from the experts will be appreciated.
I would go with no more than a 342, otherwise you are going to need better/bigger tires. Also I don't know if I caught wich tranny you have? If you have an A4 you'll need to get your shift points & comoputer re-prorgrammed, if you have an MN6 then youre good to go.
If you are going to do more with your car down the line go 3.73s. No reason to do it twice, the difference in cruising RPMs is not that big between the 3.42's and 3.73's.
Hello Mitch and Mike. I also have had 3.15, 3.42, and now 3.73 I mostly do local street rodding around. I did take a 200 mile trip in August with no problem what so ever. I am stock except for a small PT2400 converter and the gears.
If more than 33% of your driving is highway - 3.42 If you think you will do heads, cam, etc - 3.42
But if you want a "stock" engine car that is real quick - 3.73 but no more. As for the tires comment - the first few months I burned a lot of rubber just giving demos to friends - my car will lay from 0 - 60 and start back up again after shifting into 2nd. Not that itch has been scratched, I never have tire traction issues.
It is just a matter of how quick and how far down you push the peddel.
But I know that I can really jump if I want to - I just do not need to as often any more.
AS OFTEN were the key words. But lets remember back to when we first got our cars and had the 2.73 or 3.15 gears.
Here I though I had a sports car and I could not get it to spin those tires for anything. I made the proper adjustments in TC and Gears and bingo - I got what I thought I bought in the first place. Also I wanted to get rid of the EMT's so I put down a lot of rubber and enjoyed every minute of it.
Now fresh off new tires - I am more selective as to when I spend my rubber. But I still can be real quick by playing just under the "spin" threshold and actually end up quicker when I do not spin.
Oh the fredom to have the choice - to spin or not - such hard decisions.
Heres another vote for the 3.42s. Best choice I could have made considering the way I drive. I agree that they are the best all around gears for the A4.
3.73 or 3.9
I've up graded from g92 3.15 twice now.
Some run 3.9 for mostly track ET
3.73 FOR THE STREET UNLESS future mods include NOX or FI
I would use 3.42 for those adder cars
and I thought my mind was made up...3.73.....no, 3.42...no 3.73.....no, 3.42...no 3.73.....no, 3.42...no 3.73.....no, 3.42...no 3.73.....no, 3.42...no 3.73 AAAGHHH!
I will have a low mileage (14.5k) 3.42 diff for sale (possibly) soon. I am putting 4.10's in my MN6 and the installation is scheduled for 10/11. If I am happy with the 4.10s and feel i will no longer need the stocker it will likely be put up for sale in the forum. Any early interest? I also have another 3.42 diff I was going to use as a core but one of the cooling fins has broken off (according to the place that provided my new diff, I haven't had a chance to look at it yet) also I am unsure of the mileage of that unit but if there is any interest on either of these let me know.

Thanks Rock Doc (Kevin)
Kevin, what will this cost you to change to a 3:42 gear???I am looking to do the same to my 02 A4
