Default Comparing the Spec & Exedy Clutch

I'm in the need of a new clutch for my z06. Just curious if the Exedy clutch is that much better then a Spec clutch. Looking over prices the Exedy is much more expensive.

The clutch in my Z is sticking to the floor during hard acceleration.

Thanks for the help!

The Spec clutches seem to hold power okay, they are just ill mannered and noisy as hell ( chatter ). There is no comparison whatsoever in quality or price between the Spec and the Exedy.

This is a classic example of "you get what you pay for". The Exedy clutch, either the Hypersingle or the Twin, is a MUCH better clutch. Couple of obvious feature differences... The Spec can be had with either the stock cast iron flywheel or an aluminum flywheel. The spec pressure plate is the "standard" stamped steel. The Exedy clutches both have billet steel flywheels and billet aluminum pressure plates...

I have not installed a Spec clutch that does not chatter. I have not installed a Exedy clutch that does chatter.

I was going to go with a SPEC clutch and Andy at A&A convinced me to go with either a LUK Gold Series or Exedy clutch. I chose the LUK Gold because of the cheaper price. The Exedy would be a great choice for a high hp/tq set-up.

I'd choose something other than the SPEC at this point.

Which clutch are people suggesting for cars between 500 and 600 RWHP? for Drag racing type excelleration applications. I am looking for an upgrade myself, but don't see ever taking this car past 600 RWHP.

It really depends on your hp / application. Spec has 5 different versions and they have very different manners. If you have 450 hp or under I would get a Spec 2 ($400 without fly wheel) and save your hard earned money. The Luk Gold would be my second choice and it runs $795 (including Alum fly wheel).

The Exedy single will run you $1200ish and has great reviews but I find it hard to stomach the cost. If I had a big hp application I would get the Exedy dual at $1700 but for 500 or less hp/tq there is alot of good choices that are much cheaper.

comparing apples and oranges my friend. I personally have the spec III clutch currently. At first, I HATED it, but after getting used to it (1000miles or so), I love it. And I paid only $385 for it new. Now that I'll soon be pushing around 600rwhp though, we'll see how it holds up. If it goes at least a year or so w/this much power, then I'll be a spec guy for life. If not, then my plan is to go w/the exedy twin disk and never have to worry about that issue again! We'll see. Yea, the spec chatters, badly. But once you get used to driving it, it becomes easy and second nature and it never chatters anymore as long as you break it in at least 500 miles. I love my spec

I am considering a LUK clutch.

Do these clutches chatter (which is coming from what I assume are straight cut gears)?

We went with the Exedy dual. This clutch is Awesome. It shifts like butter and I haven't missed a shift yet in the 1/4 mile. We could have probably gone with the Single. But I never want to have to worry about the clutch again.

The LUK Gold Stage 2 Clutch Package, which includes an Aluminum Flywheel is awesome! No chatter or other noise and is smooth. The pedal pressure is only slightly more than stock. LUK makes the C5 and Z06 clutches. The Gold Stage 2 is 25% stronger than the Z06 clutch. If I had more horsepower (over 500) I would have gone with the Exedy. However, LUK is perfect for my setup.

Thanks for the advise guys. I'm only at 395 at the rear but was thinking about a 100 shot. I might go with the Exedy.

Thanks!

SPEC has been a good choce in my car.. i had a few issues with the stage 4 disk material.. i think they had a bad run... it was a pain in the *** but SPEC took care of me!! the clutch works great and has held up to 640rwhp on a slick... i have the alum flywheel and their billet pplate.. pretty light assembly.. i am happ with it.. if i need another i will go to the McCleod twin disk.. it works...

Can't speak for Spec, but I went from a stock clutch to the Exedy dual and I love it. Very solid smooth shifts and definetly feels like it will hold the power. Pedal is stiffer but it feels better to me that way.
